building a chicken coop {and bringing the country to me}

We have finally finished the chicken coop to house some of the newest additions to the family.

We designed and built this coop based upon two I had seen and loved.  Taking concepts from this one and this one into consideration, we modified and simplified into one that would work best for us and our yard.

It seems the older I get, the more I dream of living in the country and enjoying more of a simple, homemade life.  Maybe that will happen someday, but for now we will just have to bring part of the country to us.  If you dream of a country life too, check out some of my inspiration here.

Here's how our chicks looked when we bought them just before Easter, about 1 month ago.

And here they are today--getting big so fast.

I don't want to bore you with a step-by-step process, but here are a few pictures to show the progression of the coop, from this:

to this!

We are excited for this new adventure and love our chickens!  If you have any tips on raising chickens please leave a comment below, I would love to hear them--and we need all the help we can get!

keep primping,

  1. How fun! Your kids will love that I bet. I live in the country but don't have chicks...just one lazy dog.

    You did a great job!

  4. Growing up my dad was called 'the chicken man'... I have 2 Americanas, 2 White rocks, 2 black jersey giants, 6 buff orpingtons, 2 lavender orpingtons, and 3 runner ducks...
but definately not as nice of a chicky coop! my hubs doesn't share the same vision of a designer coop as I do... I dream of old windows and fancy doors for mine...
Enjoy your chicks! I adore mine!

  7. Michele, I love your house and I know your chickens do. We searched for a year until I finally found what I wanted which was a child's old playhouse. And we found it right out in the country where we live. And the owners even delivered it for us. We built a run on one end of it and bumped out nesting boxes on the other side. Our chickens, which I adore, seem to love it. You will enjoy your chickens so much. Ours are such a source of pleasure. :)

  9. Lovely chicken coop! It is just beautiful. I hope your chicks know what luxury they are living in. I finally gave up my dream of having chickens as I really don't need one more thing to do, feed, or take care of. So, to satisfy my desires, this weekend, I bought the most lovely cement chicken that is sitting down and beautifully aged with green algae. It looks perfect in my back yard where chickens would roam if I had any. He/she is just perfect even if it's not real.

  15. Beautiful coop! We have had chickens for several years now and they are very easy keepers! Make sure you keep a light on because they need about 14 hours of daylight a day in order to produce eggs. Ours lay all year long with a light on. Good luck and have fun with them!

  16. Could you please share the step-by-step instructions on how to make this? We've tossed around the idea of getting chickens and my fiance would like to build the coop himself. Instructions would at least give him an idea of how to start it, if he doesn't want to copy your design completely. Thank you

  17. The best advice for raising chickens is to make friends with people who raise chickens and / or sign up for a poultry forum such as backyardchickens.com. That way you can ask questions when things come up. Great coop! Do you have just 3 chickens?

  18. I love your coop! With our 30+ birds we have a section of the barn blocked off for them, they would be jealous of yours!

Best tip: Get them used to laying in the nest boxes, it makes life so much easier. The daily Easter egg hunt stop being so fun when you find a nest full of rotten eggs

  20. That chicken coop is fantastic! I want chickens in the worst way but we can't have them where we live ... but if I ever have some, I definitely want a beautiful coop like yours!

  21. How much did this cost to build all together. Do you have the plans and a list of how to build? I would love to get my hands on them!!

  22. Do you have any photos of what the nest/food storage area looks like on the right with the doors open? I am sure it's covered in poo by now, but I'd still love to see that part to get a better idea. Your coop looks simple yet very nice. Not overdone (because they will poo on everything anyways), but not an eyesore in your backyard either. We had 3 to test the waters and are ready to get 5 now. They are such a great learning tool for kids and make delicious eggs to boot.

  24. There is a blog called FRESH EGGS DAILY that provides a ton of information on chicken husbandry, etc. I hope that you might find something helpful there...
